"Sitting is the new smoking"
This statement is becoming an increasingly popular phrase. 70-90% of the Western adult population will have a spinal complaint, and low back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide according to the Global Burden of Disease. Experts estimate that as much as 80% of the population will experience a back problem at some point in their lives. Most cases of back pain are mechanical and non-organic - meaning they are not caused by serious conditions.
The UK Office of National Statistics reported that over the course of a year there were a total of 30.8 million days lost to sickness absence due to musculoskeletal problems in the UK.
There is, therefore, a growing awareness of the importance of spinal education. The chiropractic profession is the leader in this field. Due to their specialised focus and extended medical training, chiropractors are uniquely positioned to meet the growing demand for educational approaches to preventative and musculoskeletal health. Spinal check-ups are not yet in the public domain as accepted routine in the same way dental check-ups are but the rationale for them exists equally. The spine is a weight-bearing structure exposed to stress every day and the momentum for a regular spinal check-up exists and is understood thanks to the educational efforts of the dental profession. Therefore, free Spinal Awareness Sessions have become the core of our Business Education Programme.
During a session, our chiropractors can demonstrate the one thing individuals can do every single day that can help prevent an inflexible spine, strained neck and sore shoulders, organ damage, muscle degeneration as well as leg disorders such as poor circulation, just by sitting right and moving correctly.
The sessions complement varying initiatives that HR departments have in place to care for employees in the wellbeing space and appeal equally to Facilities, Property Management and OH departments and their remit in Health and Safety.
Introductory talks are 30 minutes (09:30-10:00) and focus on stress and posture and the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. Staff members are introduced to the ramifications of incorrect posture over time, the fundamentals of good posture and the best position for the spine and some simple exercises and general education around chiropractic services. Feedback is consistently excellent.
Before attending the session, staff members are invited to pre-book their 5-minute posture assessment via a time slot sheet (10:00-13:30) analysing top to toe posture along with alignments at key points of the body. Specifically, at the assessment, top to toe posture is assessed for any evidence of anatomical imbalance via measuring weight distribution and alignments at key points. Taking this as a window to the spine allows a good gauge of what is likely to be happening with the spine over time.
We are not there to advise your staff that they need to alter their office environment ultimately costing your business financially, instead, our goal is to allow your employees to find out more about their bodies to achieve better health and require fewer days off work.
We currently offer a voucher and invitation for an initial spine check – an in-depth top to toe musculoskeletal physical assessment equivalent to a routine dental check-up. This is also an opportunity for staff members to gain insightful information about nurturing a healthy nervous system and other supporting topics.
We are able to tailor a special offer based on your preferences for staff members who would benefit from a full chiropractic assessment. They will receive a voucher on the day to be used at our clinic in Harrogate.
The Programme further compliments Private Medical Insurance provisions which are increasingly a standard feature of staff benefit packages.
in addition to this, we are registered with all the leading private medical insurance providers: Cigna, Aviva, Simply Health, Axa PPP (except for BUPA) and work alongside staff members to activate their policy entitlement where relevant.
Similarly, staff members with Cash Plans can claim any visits up to their maximum allowance on these schemes.
Chiropractic is an increasingly explicit feature of such plans as providers acknowledge the core role these professions must play in addressing an epidemic of musculoskeletal complaints as made explicit in recent NHS directives.
HR department decision-makers are increasingly demonstrating their enthusiasm to see staff members activate entitlements and support worthy initiatives which allow them to do so.
